i've taken my cars to the track on a few occasions and i drive it hard regularly also. from my experience my engine also performed at its best when i had either castrol syntec(the german version) or motul 300v. other brands i've used also are mobil 1, amsoil, and royal purple. while all of them are pretty good one of my previous engines had a bad case of lifter tick and also had a slight knock to it. out of all the oils castrol and motul relieved the problems completely.

Oil analysis is a hobby of mine and I've done extensive testing of both oil and ATF over the life of my Acura RSX from factory fill to 120,000mi +. I've learned many surprising things:

  • Acura's 5w-20 oil recommendation is spot on. Heavier weights do not cause less wear and sometimes increase wear.
  • For the driving that I do, synthetics, such as Mobil 1, do not work better than conventional oils.
  • The two oils that gave me the best overall wear results were Havoline 5w-20 and Valvoline Durablend. My testing included some expensive synthetics such as Synergyn's ester and di-ester basestock 0w-20.
I drive in mild weather conditions with a fairly even mix of highway and city miles. YMMV.

Sticking with the manufacturer's recommendation for oil viscosity is particularly critical with overhead cam engines. Everything is sized to get the correct amount of oil to the cam bearings and lobes. Moving to a thinner or thicker oil could compromise delivery under some conditions.
