i've been hearing about some new toyota tech to be in our cars soon called "pre-crash steering". apparently it will know if a crash will happen and steer the car away to reduce the impact.

this sounds like it might end up doing more bad then good.

anyone know more about it? maybe a pre-crash steering press release?

It's called SMACsystem (swift mechanized attitude control system). The SMACsystem monitors several driver, car, and surrounding-environment sensors to determine when a driver is distracted, driving aggressively, or otherwise making bad decisions. Then the SMAC hand pops out of the steering wheel and slaps the driver while a robort voice warns, "Straighten up and fly right!".

On a third infraction, the driver-side door pops open and the SMAC hand slaps the driver out of the vehicle and drives itself home.

This is one of the safety technologies that Mercedes Benz developed and gave away to other automakers for free. MB drivers get a luxurious kid-skinned matching leather SMAC hand.
