Toyota IQ - 2009 - Deactivate Passenger Airbag

Hi!
In Malta it is legal to have baby in front as long as airbag is off. I can’t imagine trying to get baby in and out of the back so this is best option.

But i can’t figure it out! Its a 2009 toyota, with keyless entry and start. Anyone knows how to deactivate?

thanks!

Personally, I used to put my kid into the rear car sit through the open trunk or with the front seat folded and moved orward - there is plenty of space. That said, most modern cars have pressure sensor under the front seat - it would not activate the air bag unless it detects an adult in that seat. See the car manual page 78 and on.

Welcome to the forum.

Check your manual. As @maksym says USA models are required to have special sensor in front passenger seat. If a baby seat is detected airbag is turned off. Canada models did not have this (requirement). Malta model I really would not know, unless you imported a USA model then very likely you have this feature. Beyond these two countries I do not know about the feature whether it is included or not.

Also, USA models have a light near the radio that shows ”Airbag Off” so you know for sure your baby is safe.

I think i need to try putting the car seat in through the trunk and see how that goes!

Mine is a japanese model and unfortunately no manual. Been trying to find one but seems impossible! Ok will see if the airbag off sign goes on with the carseat in place

Thank you! I managed to translate it and unfortunately it seems the japanese models don’t switch off!
Were you able to determine where it advises to put a child/baby seat? I assume it would be the back (left as driver seat is front right in Japan)?
I put my car seat in the passenger side. People always look at me funny when I open the trunk to put my kid in, it's hillarious but it works. My wife is very tiny so there is no leg room problems with the seat pushed all the way forward. Hope that helps.

at the back but you can place it on any side. I will do passenger due to leg space =)

Thanks for this - however my concern is the first year or so when I will be using an infant carseat of my 3in1 travel system. Everytime i need to take it in and out to pop it onto the travel system. Im wondering how annoying its gna be to put the belt in everytime. Will find out when it arrives!!

Hopefully not too bad. There's very little trunk depth to lean over and reach the seat. With the driver side rear seat folded down it should be reasonably accessible. When my son was younger we could fit myself, him, and a full size cello into the iQ. It was cramped but doable. If you find it unpleasant please update and I'll try to dig into disabling the appropriate airbag(s).

Oh it will definitely be annoying lol. After a few times, I said screw it, not going to bother with anymore. Just left it in the car and would carry my kid around instead :ROFLMAO:

Our son was born 8 lbs. Before 1 yr he passed 20 lbs and out of baby seat. I got 3 Prince Lionheart 2-Stage Seat Savers (1 of each color to match seat color). Good for protecting your seats....
