Single wheel hitch hook up...

1075 Views 13 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Teensdouch
I'm looking to hook up my single wheel trailer and came up with this setup using the Curt hitch that was installed by the previous owner. I've added the two 2" receivers by bolting them in place. Kinda heavy but hopefully they will work as needed. I'll still need to fabricate some extension "L" arms so the trailer will attach to the hitch at the proper height. ;)

Gitting a little closer. I'll need to modify the exhaust as it's in the way of the right side receiver. I had to take the rear valence off as the receivers wouldn't fit with it still installed. I guess I'll have to look into a custom valence in the near future. ;)

Why not use a two wheel trailer? Is one wheel easier to maneuver?

Yes, much easier to maneuver and it won't jackknife! It's basically almost opposite of a standard ball hitch trailer. I have to turn tight vs swinging wide. I can go through drive throughs and parking garages without any issues. And I haven't seen another iQ with a single wheel trailer hooked up to it. ;)

Had some time to work on the adapter plates and cut them out to allow better articulation without the landing gear hitting the plates. I also dropped about 4lbs from the hitch setup. ;)

Notched and installed!

That trailer, without seeing the rest of it, looks quite large. (I was thinking more along the lines of a wheelbarrow)!

Is there risk of tipping the iQ over?

The trailer is about 5' long and about 3' wide. It would take a lot to tip the iQ over with this trailer. ;)

Nice! What's the impact on driving maneuverability & gas milage?

MPG is about 3 mpg less so about 20 miles less range per tank. Maneuverability is fantastic as the trailer can’t sway or jackknife. Because it’s a short wheelbase, it can git a little bumpy going over bumps. I feel this is a good compromise between a cargo rack and a full length trailer. ;)
