There's currently an embargo on the long-awaited Scion iQ, forcing us to wait just a little bit longer on official information, but this much has snuck out: the 2012 Scion city car will start at a not-insubstantial $15,995.

That's a bit more than the Fiat 500 and the Mazda2, which are $15,500 and $14,730, respectively. The 500 and 2 also offer more than 3 seats, in cars that are slightly bigger than a phone booth.

But in the Scion's defense it will start well-equipped, including Pandora Internet radio, and other models will get available navigation as well as Scion's assortment of look-like-you're-going-fast bits. The rollout will start in October with the West Coast, then the southern states in January, the East Coast, and then the Midwest.

Still, that price tag won't do a good job of convincing Americans that small cars are the wave of the future! With the twice-as-big Nissan Versa starting a whole $5,000 cheaper, maybe this thing will only make sense to New Yorkers or San Franciscans who still find the idea of jamming three cars into one parking space to be a zany idea.

But hey, compared to the Aston Martin Cygnet, it's a downright steal!

Pricing is going to be announced to the public tomorrow, 7/20/11. What I do know is that the iQ will be released in waves. Wave 1: (LA,SF,PTL) 10/1/11; Wave 2: (DEN, SET,GST) 1/2/12; Wave 3: ( BOS , NY ,CAT) 2/1/12; Wave 4: (CHI,CIN,KC) 3/1/12. The starting price for the iQ will be $15995 including destination from the factory, and there will be three factory options available. 1.Rear Speaker Package $100 2. Storage Package $20 3. Blizzard Pearl exterior color $220. However, at this time, I have not been informed as to the contents of those packages, although they seem self explanatory. As of this time, you have the only order in my order bank and I’ve have had your vehicle preferenced with the factory. With a 1/2/12 release date, the factory probably won’t allocate any iQs until late November-early December for an early January delivery date. As I receive more information I will update you, but please feel free to contact me. Also, judging by the model number of the iQ (and as of this time there is only one), it looks as though it will only be available in an automatic transmission. I realize you want a manual. As soon as I have confirmation that they are only going to build an automatic, I will be in touch. Thanks for your patience.

thanks! good to finally hear some information from the main source.

I wonder what the top trim Scion iQ with all if not most accessories will run us with taxes included. By my guess it will run us around the low 20k's
