Despite the poll below that shows 75% of the respondents voted for stick shift, the U.S.Scion iQ will not be getting that option as I got a reply from Scion below on the question of the possibility of a six speed manual transmission being an option in the near future. Looks like I will be getting the new Yaris with manual transmission, and getting 1 mpg better than the iQ with the automatic CVT transmission. EPA Mileage figures 2012 Yaris 30-38 vs iQ 36-37 as 90% of my driving is highway.

Thanks for contacting Scion. We appreciate your interest and your feedback in the iQ. Although iQ is sold in Europe in a manual transmission version, there are no plans at this time to introduce this version in the U.S. The CVT transmission is a great choice for the urban drivers maneuvering in tight spaces.

We make every effort to manufacture a quality product by researching, testing, and constantly monitoring performance. Consumer opinion and perception also play an active role in our ongoing efforts to lead the automobile industry in quality, innovation, styling, and reliability.

It is through communications such as yours that we become aware of the reactions and expectations of our customers; and we sincerely appreciate the time you have taken to provide your feedback.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly at 866-707-2466, Monday-Friday 5:00am-6:00pm PST.

Thanks for your interest in Scion.

that really sucks, Scion being who they are...Scion a Toyota sub-brand that is meant to introduce some coolness isn't doing what a lot of people will want, a manual transmission!

If they could release a Scion iQ manual transmission it should help bring some more interest to this car.

Looking into my crystal ball I see them making the 6 speed available next Summer, as they will have many units available on their lots with no buyers. They could have smashed sales records, but their CVT only decision will have them discounting the iQ next Spring to try to get them sold and off the lots. Then they will see their CVT automatic transmission decision was seriously flawed. By then it will be too late as they will have lost hundreds of potential U.S. sales to to other small economical models that do offer a manual transmission.

I have canceled my iQ order and moved my deposit money to a 2012 Yaris 5 speed manual. If the Mazda 2 was available yet I might have gone that way, but my deposit money is already at my Toyota/Scion dealer and they will have a 2012 Yaris for me around the middle of November.

You better check if the bell housing fits up to the 1.3 engine, as the one you linked is for a 1.0 liter engine. Also are the pressure plat and clutch sturdy enough to run in a 1.3 versus a 1.0.

I think they would not say that it is planned because they want people to buy what is offered now.
I agree! Toyota usually does stuff like that and it's typical of many other brands and makes sense. It's only in the best interest of the brand.

No question, a manual transmission iQ is going to happen, I can see it happening already. It's all just a matter of time, I think they rumored it to be around mid-2012

My 2012 Yaris will be in Port of Long Beach on 10/20/11, and at my dealer two weeks later around 11/01/11. I decided on this due to the Scion transmission decision. The attached pic is what I will be driving in about 15 days. Maybe I might take a look at an iQ with a 6 speed manual in a year or so.

im happy you stayed Toyota! Toyota/Scion has a lot upsides to the company but these little downsides like pushing the release date every so often, no cruise control, no manual transmission on a car that can really use it (cough cough iQ!) kinda kills the brand a bit.

Good to hear your still interested in the iQ for the future.

keep us updated on your Yaris :)

2012 Scion iQ Performance | U.S. News Best Cars

Iam going to forward this tomorrow to scion
Did they reply to you?

I believe Scion already knows it's disappointing a lot of people by not releasing a manual transmission Scion iQ, but there has to be a good reason behind this. A manual transmission would only help with getting better MPG and making the iQ seem that much better on paper.

Must be a good reason for this

I have no interest in changing the transmission, all I want to do is change the shift points.....................I know that this is possible..................is anyone aware of how to do this. I just want the transmission to lock up at 3500 rpm. Is that too much to ask? Also, the off the line acceleration is too sensitive, I want to reprogram that also.
