Engine & Transmission Interchange

I've been wondering if any U.S. models of other models of Scions or Toyotas have engines and transmissions that would be interchangeable with the IQ. I would think that Toyota would have used the same drivetrain in some of their other models of cars to save on manufacturing costs.

I really enjoy my IQ so I've been thinking that when the drivetrain wears out it would be great to install an engine with a manual transmission. If it would be cost effective I would import the complete 6 speed transmission conversion from Europe or the UK to the U.S. Perhaps there are some being parted out since the IQ has been around for over 10 years now.

It would be great to be able to travel up steep hills without angering motorists behind me.

I believe the engine is fairly common 1NR-FE used in a ton of cars. The transmission though is unique to IQ to accommodate how it sits in the car. If you were to source a manual, you would have to look somewhere in Europe.

For traveling uphills though you want to look into this setup

The guy has a full blog detailing the swap

Yeah, I watched that video. It would definitely be a lot of fun to drive!
Try shifting into S mode for ascending small hills at cruising speed or B mode for ascending steep hills at slow speed. They both will allow for higher revs, but the latter also offers a fixed hill climb ratio.

In some ways our CVT is superior to the 6 speed transmission. Technically we have an infinite number of gear ratios available to maximize power delivery.

In practice our CVT is hampered by economy and mass market biased tuning (poor cooling and fake shifts) coupled with poor engine throttle response which hampers acceleration.

Thankfully the poor throttle response can be addressed with the installation of a throttle controller. I run an Injen X-Pedal Pro and the added response it provides makes the CVT feel more than adequate, IMO.

Thank you, Bosko, for the driving tips. I'll try using the S or B mode and see what happens. Manual transmissions are nice because you can flat tow the car behind a camper or motorhome, they get better fuel mileage, they're less expensive to rebuild and there are less electronics to create problems when they get old.

Thank you maksym for the information about the manual transmission being unique to the IQ. It would probably be easier to import the whole car from Europe than to try to import all the required parts for the conversion.
